You might be wondering what coolant actually is and how it is relevant for you. Coolant is a fluid that transfers heat and regulates the temperature of your engine block and parts. Whether you are looking for a used or new vehicle, you should constantly check if your engine coolant levels are stable. Engine coolant contains an additive that ensures that it won’t freeze below 32 degrees fahrenheit and that it won’t overheat above 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Read on to learn more about how to check coolant levels and when to change it. Explore our service and parts tips page to learn more about how to check car oil or how to remove the smoke smell for your vehicle.
You do not need to open the radiator cap to check for the levels. Instead, you can check the markings on the side of the coolant reservoir, where if the liquid reaches the full marking line, you are good to drive on your High Point drive. However, if it is not full, then you can remove the radiator cap and add a coolant or a 50/50 mix of coolant and water. Read the bottle to see if it is a premixed brand. You should also check the radiator hose for any leaks or damages. Coolant levels deplete over time, so it is good to check it every three to six months. If the liquid is blue, green, yellow, or red, you are good to go. If the liquid is brown or colorless, flush the system and replace the fluid.
Note: If you’re adding more liquid to the cooling system, be sure the engine has cooled. Also, don’t attempt to open the radiator cap while the engine is hot.
If you are driving on Winston Salem roads and notice that there is a sludgy appearance to the liquid, be sure to schedule service with our technicians as soon as possible. It is very possible that your vehicle has an internal gasket leak. Driving the car will drain the coolant quickly, so be sure to schedule service with us today!
